Impressions and photos of a holiday in California with a detour to the Grand Canyon
San Francisco to Eureka
Travelling north we encountered the first Sequoia trees or Redwoods. The redwoods in this area are commonly called "Coast Redwood" and they are the tallest trees in the world. The biggest trees can be up to 115 meter high and have a diameter at the base of up to 7 meters.

The biggest trees on earth can really make you feel small. In these forests there is more wood than air.

|
John Steinbeck was here and had something to say about it. The trees are truly from another time because the oldest ones are over 2000 years old.

Traveling through the coastal redwoods area the ocean is never far away. The redwoods ecosystem depends on coastal mist and fog.

This is the famous drive through tree. But you can also walk through.

This 2400 year old tree is 96 meter high and it has a diameter of 6.4 meter.

Even during daytime it is always dark under these giant trees.

Feeling small like a fairy.

Sunlight shining through the trees.

Looking up you can hardly see where the trees touch the sky.

Spectacular views generated by sunlight and trees.

My tree. I want to take it home!
By the end of this day we reached the small port town of Eureka where we would spend two nights to have time for visits to more Redwoods tomorrow. Goto Day 5.
