California - Day 5

Visit Redwoods

This day we stayed in the Redwoods area, travelling from Eureka northwards to the Redwood National & State Parks. Highlights of the day were the hikes through the forests with amazing trees. We visited the Lady Bird Johnson Grove and we went to see Fern Canyon.

The size of the trees is enormous and it is almost impossible to get an entire tree in one photo. Therefore it took a combination of two photographs to show this tree.

Many trees show marks of forest fires. The fire can cause the tree to become hollow, but the tree survives.

Yes, the wood had a reddish brown color, so that's how it earned the name Redwood.

Hey, somebody made a statue of a man and a cow. It takes a moment to realize how big they really are.

A few miles north of Orick we followed the Davison road, which is a scenic route to reach the beach. In the forest we spotted a number of deer.

The beach is "littered" with old tree trunks.

Fern Canyon is an amazing place. A tiny river between two walls that are overgrown with thousands of ferns.

Another elk was waiting for us near the main road on our way back to Eureka.

At the end of the day we were treated on this natural light show.

We returned to our hotel in Eureka and the next day our journey would take us towards Lake Tahoe. Goto Day 6
